Unanticipated losses occur during the lives of many children, through death, divorce, incarceration, and other traumas. As a child deals with these losses in therapy, the parent can either enhance the child s ongoing development or create further disruption. Working with parents to understand their own needs and responses to loss supports the child s progressive development. Two case presentations will illustrate how the therapist can facilitate this growth.
